Where Seoul's Old Walls Meet Its Midnight Shopping
AMAZING TOURS

Step off the subway into two Seouls at once
Some places in Seoul make you choose between old and new. Dongdaemun doesn't. Step out of the subway at Dongdaemun History & Culture Park and you're standing in a neighbourhood where centuries-old fortress walls sit a few minutes from a silver, UFO-like landmark, and where a vast maze of shopping malls hums long after most cities have gone to bed.
Welcome to the first stop in my Amazing Tours chapter. Let's start in one of the most surprising corners of Seoul.
What makes Dongdaemun unforgettable
The shopping district that never seems to end. Dongdaemun Market is a sprawling commercial district made up of roughly 26 malls, 30,000 stores and 50,000 manufacturers spread across about 10 city blocks. Fabrics, jewelry, sporting goods, toys: you'll find almost anything here, but the real draw is discount fashion, which locals and visitors both come for. You could spend a week here and still not see it all, so don't try. Pick a few spots and enjoy getting a little lost.
A neighbourhood with a story. The area's name points to its history, and you can feel it. Dongdaemun Seonggwak Park is a green stretch of Seoul's old fortress wall, a quiet contrast to the neon, while Dongdaemun History Museum is a perfect way to spend an afternoon when you need a break from the crowds.
Design that stops you in your tracks. Dongdaemun Design Plaza is one of the most Instagrammed sites in South Korea, a futuristic building that hosts events all year round. Bring a charged phone.
How to tackle the market without feeling overwhelmed
Grab a map first, then get to know the layout. The main street divides the complex in two:
Section 1 (the Doosan Tower side): more tourist-friendly. Expect money exchanges, English-speaking help desks, and the option to buy single items rather than in bulk. Look for Doosan Tower, Migliore and hello APM.
Section 2 (the wholesale side): more focused on wholesale, but still worth the trip. Designer's Club, Migliore Valley and Nuzzon are the big fashion malls here. Heads up: there are generally no fitting rooms, and refunds or exchanges may not be guaranteed, so shop with confidence.
Bookworm tip: head to the first floor of Pyeonghwa Market for secondhand and rare English-language books, often at decent discounts.
Hungry? Make your way to Mukja Golmok, a street packed with restaurants serving soup, fishcakes and grilled fish.
Getting there and when to go
Take the subway to Dongdaemun History & Culture Park station or to Dongdaemun station. Most stores open from mid-morning, with some running around the clock, and the majority close on Mondays and public holidays. Hours vary by mall, so double-check before you go.
Make it an experience: tours worth booking
Dongdaemun is wonderful on your own, but pairing it with a guided experience takes your Seoul trip up a level. These caught my eye (prices are per adult in CAD at the time of writing and can change, so check current rates):
Seoul Night Tour: Gwangjang Market, Royal Palace and Naksan Park (about 5.5 hours, from CA$63). Perfect for seeing the city glow after dark.
Seoul Fun Food Tour: 12 Food Tastings (3 hours, from CA$126). Come hungry.
Guided City Wall Sunset Hike with Korean Dinner (3 hours, from CA$90). Walk the old fortress wall as the sun goes down.
Small-Group Royal Palace and Seoul City Tour with hotel pick-up (8 hours, from CA$96). A highly rated all-day introduction to the city.
Hanbok Rental with Gyeongbokgung Palace Entry (from CA$10). Wear traditional Korean dress through palace grounds.
DMZ Tour from Seoul (about 7.5 hours, from CA$49). A powerful day trip if you have time to spare.
Where to stay
Base yourself in Jung-gu, the central district that includes Myeong-dong. It's well connected by subway, close to Dongdaemun, and has a wide range of hotels from budget to luxury. Search by dates and compare flight-and-hotel packages through my link below.

My quick-start plan
Morning: Dongdaemun History Museum and a walk along the fortress wall in Seonggwak Park.
Afternoon: Dongdaemun Design Plaza for photos, then explore the Section 1 malls.
Evening: Dinner at Mukja Golmok, or join a night tour to see Seoul after dark.
Final thoughts
Dongdaemun History & Culture Park is proof that Seoul doesn't ask you to pick between its past and its future. It hands you both, plus a very good bowl of soup.
This is just the beginning of the Amazing Tours chapter. Next up, we keep exploring Seoul. Where should we go next? Tell me in the comments.
